WJ’s First “Online Chat” a Success

Rob-Portrait351As some of you may know, last Sunday night we hosted our very first online chat here at the Woodworker’s Journal. I must admit to some pre-chat jitters. What if you threw a woodworking chat and nobody came? As it turned out, I had nothing to fear … we had a bunch of woodworkers chatting and lurking for the entire hour. Another pre-chat concern was blown right out of the water as well – what if nobody really had anything to say? Um, not a problem.

In fact, what with answering the occasional question directed to me personally, I had a hard time keeping up with the flurry of questions, answers and observations. I had originally thought to try to keep the chat “on course,” aligned with the announced topic of the discussion. This proved to be somewhat like herding cats.

But I have to say that I don’t believe anyone cared in the least; they were too busy enjoying themselves. And so I have to conclude that our first online chat effort was a success!

I am looking forward to next month’s chat, and I hope to see you folks there again. See you in the ether!

Sincerely,

— Rob Johnstone, Woodworker’s Journal

Q & A

  • Using HVLP with Urethane

Can I use a high volume low pressure sprayer for urethane? Can I buy a HVLP gun that attaches to my compressor, or do I need a system that has the gun integrated with a small compressor?

  • Stuck Chuck on Lathe

I bought a Supernova chuck for my small woodturning lathe about two years ago. I recently purchased a full-sized lathe, but am unable to remove the chuck from the original lathe.

  • Lumber Measurements

I went to a lumber dealer here, and he said he had maple in both 4/4 and 8/4 sizes. I had no idea what he was talking about. What is meant by 4/4 and 8/4?

  • Lining up on a Biscuit Joiner

I have trouble getting adjoining pieces to line up when using my biscuit joiner. Any suggestions?
