Good To Meet You
Last weekend the Woodworker’s Journal participated in the Minnesota Woodworking Show. It was a great time. I got to meet many of the eZine (and print magazine) readers, who were very kind in their comments. Several were baffled by my appearance (I thought you were shorter, younger … you gotta update that photo on the eZine, etc.), but most said that they really enjoyed the eZine … for those comments, I’d like to say thank you.
We gave away a bunch of stuff at our booth, the most significant of which were three table saws. The drawings drew quite a crowd. One winner, after I had helped him put the saw in the back of his SUV, stood back for a moment and said, “My wife will never believe that I didn’t buy this!” I offered to write a note confirming the win, but he declined.
The very best part of the weekend for me was spending time talking with woodworkers. It is a community that has much to say for itself. Woodworkers are often generous, outgoing, good sports and folks that are fun to hang out with. I think I would like to do something like that every weekend … but maybe not during fishing season!
Sincerely,
— Rob Johnstone, Woodworker’s Journal

Tracking the Elusive Crown Guard: Its Origins, Purpose and Simple Assembly Instructions
To give us as complete a picture as possible, I contacted two of the people whose Internet postings started the whole discussion, and got them to share their reasons for making these fascinating guards, and their methods of creating them.

Going Rate for Woodworking
I am about to embark on my own cottage industry building birdhouses, butterfly houses, ladybug houses etc. The only thing I don’t know is how much to charge per hour. What is the going rate?

How Long Will a Blank Stay Green?
How long will a bowl blank stay “green” if it has been coated in Anchorseal? I was under the impression that these blanks would not split, but I was wrong, as two of them have split so far.

Is Sumac Good for Woodworking?
Is this wood of any value for woodworking or should I make it into firewood, and how should I handle it? I have a sawmill so I could process it myself.

RPM for a Forstner Bit
I purchased a good quality Forstner bit, but the bit should only be run at 350 rpm. My drill press won’t go slower than 620 rpm. Do you know of anything I can do?

Micro Fence: Machinist’s Accuracy Meets Woodworker’s Favorite Tool
It’s often said that the best tools are the ones that do one job, but do it exceptionally well. That’s what I feel about Micro Fence, an aftermarket router fence system that virtually defines the word “precision.”

Whose Tool Is It?
Is this true, readers? I know I say “the table saw” instead of “my table saw,” but now I’m curious. Perhaps more of you are like Norm.

Puttin’ On a Show: Our Cordless Jigsaw Test
We had a bench set up with four cordless jigsaws — the only four on the market — and asked people who came by our booth to put them through their paces.
