CNC tool manufacturer Axiom Tool Group, Inc., announced a recent move into a new state-of-the-art corporate office and distribution center in the heart of Uptown Westerville, Ohio — a suburb of Columbus. Their first day of operation at the new facility was January 2.

In addition to developing high quality CNC machines and accessories, the company is also committed to providing training classes and lifetime support. Its new headquarters will help to better achieve all of these goals.

“From our modern facility, we’re able to offer a full-range of machines, accessories and training to ensure that our customers have everything they need to get up and running,” said Todd Damon, Axiom Tool Group president. “We quickly outgrew our previous space, and our new facility will now fully sustain the Axiom brand while better supporting Axiom’s sales, marketing, training and order fulfillment.”

Axiom reports that its plans for this year include introducing new Axiom Precision CNC router models and accessories as well as other innovative products such as Axiom’s floor-standing STRATUS air cleaner.

Axiom’s new facility also promises to help the company build new relationships with the Westerville community. “The local community has given us a warm welcome and we look forward to becoming a productive part of the Westerville area,” said Damon. “Our new facility is in the heart of Uptown Westerville in an area that is transforming into a hub for innovation and technology.”

Since 2014, the Axiom Tool Group has been building small-format CNC routers that take instructions from a computer to shape or carve wood, plastics and aluminum. Axiom’s product line integrates technology and components from the industrial market into machines that fit the budget and size constraints of the small shop. The company provides machines in a wide range of sizes for both hobbyist and industrial applications. Pricing for its new entry-level i2R Series machine begins at $2,999. On the other end of the spectrum, its flagship Elite series CNC models sell for $10,999 and up.

“Our Axiom Precision CNC machines have been thoughtfully designed and rigorously tested so that our customers enjoy unparalleled accuracy, repeatability and speed,” Damon says. “All Axiom CNC machines are engineered from the ground up like larger machines, yet will fit comfortably in any shop.”

Best Topcoat for Ipe Swing? https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/best-topcoat-for-ipe-swing/ Tue, 02 Apr 2019 13:00:19 +0000 http://rocklerwj.wpengine.com/?p=51190 We've stained our ipe outdoor swing already, and now it's time for a protective topcoat. What's the best choice for this wood?

We have had an outdoor swing made of ipe wood. We have used a stain on this wood. What kind of finishing should we use on this outdoor swing? – Debra Arnold

Tim Inman: Indoor fine furniture finishing is my world. I am limited in my outdoor advice. But I will say again, there is no clear finish that will withstand outdoor conditions for very long. Some last longer than others, but all will become victim to Old Sol and his ultraviolet sunshine rays eventually. I would first be sure the stain you want to use is lightfast. You don’t want your nice colors to fad and be gone after a few weeks outside. Then, I would select a finish made for exterior marine use. There are some very nice spar marine varnish products available now. Unlike in days gone by, most of today’s exterior products are polyurethane based. They will usually give good service. Don’t be fooled into thinking this or any finish will be a once-in-a-lifetime coating, though. It won’t. Think covers, shelters, shade.

Chris Marshall: For me, the best outdoor finish is the one that’s easiest to re-finish — because regardless of what you use, refinishing is inevitable. The choice you make now will impact how much work you’ll have on your hands later. Here’s a case in point: A couple of years ago, I built the mahogany porch swing shown above. I used an oil-based exterior deck stain with UV inhibitors to finish it. That was it. No shiny topcoat of any kind. Why? Well, because mahogany is an excellent outdoor-compatible wood — just like your swing’s ipe. Neither of these woods require special protection from sunlight, rotting or insects, as many other less durable woods do. Now, I’ll admit that the stain color on my swing is beginning to fade, but the wood is otherwise as good as new. This summer, I should probably refinish it to refresh the bright color again. But, that will be as easy as scrubbing the wood clean and reapplying the stain. No stripping, scraping or sanding will be required. So, that’s my recommendation for you: if you’ve used a good quality exterior stain on your ipe swing, you’re already done. No other topcoat is really necessary.

Bar Clamp Becomes Quick Jobsite Caliper https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/bar-clamp-becomes-quick-jobsite-caliper/ Tue, 02 Apr 2019 12:41:54 +0000 http://rocklerwj.wpengine.com/?p=51279 This reader had trouble getting an accurate reading on a rounded workpiece. A bar clamp provided a quick fix.

During a recent fireplace mantel rebuild, I needed to take an accurate inside measurement of an assembled frame in order to replace a raised panel. The existing panel, and the rounded-over edges of its opening, made it difficult to take the reading with my tape measure. Instead, I grabbed a bar clamp and used the flares on the bottom of the jaws to serve as a quick-and-dirty caliper. I spread the jaws open until the outer edges of the flares contacted the panel opening. Then I carefully removed the clamp and measured the flares for an accurate reading of the opening. It was just the tool I needed!

In the last issue, Joanna shared the tale of her dog’s “stick envy” and wondered whether woodworkers suffered from the same malady. At least one does, at least to an extent. – Editor

“I am absolutely driven by ‘stick envy’ and will submit that woodworking design is an evolutionary process in which a ‘new’ design or look can be traced back to a previous work. Having said that, I will often see a piece I find attractive and work up my own based on those parts I like with my own inspirations added in. I do this in cooking, too. So much so that my wife chides me for never leaving well enough alone. There is something about setting out to just copy someone else’s design that feels unethical to me, although I readily acknowledge that there is a purpose to this in courses that teach painting or sculpture. For it to be mine, I have to have at least some of me in it.” – Lee Ohmart

We also heard an additional tip from a reader about the quest for perfect miters described in our Q&A section. – Editor

“I read with interest your story on ‘perfect miters.’ I was in the picture framing business for a number of years and encountered this same situation, often. A quick and final solution is to make sure both parallel sides are the same length. After making the cuts, it’s a matter of putting them ‘back to back’ and comparing if they are exactly the same dimension. If they are not, simply shave a little off the longer one until perfect. Guaranteed the joints will not open. This takes a few seconds only to check.” – John Proulx
