Rockler Sanding Bow https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/rockler-sanding-bow/ Tue, 23 Oct 2018 12:30:46 +0000 http://rocklerwj.wpengine.com/?p=48037 Adjustable, foldable accessory accepts cloth-backed sandpaper and makes sanding curved corners and irregular shapes easier.

Rockler’s Sanding Bow can help you smooth rounded and radiused corners or irregular shapes, including such items as curved table legs, carvings and guitar, ukulele and mandolin necks. A long stroke length of about a foot makes for fast sanding with less clogging.

The tool’s glass fiber construction with rubber overmold ensures durability as well as a comfortable grip. Its two-piece handle has a toothed hinge for setting belt tension or to fold the bow up conveniently. When fully extended, the handle is 12-1/4 in. long, and it is 8-1/4 in. when folded up. Tool-free knurled knobs on both ends of the bow engage or release the handle clamps for replacing sanding belts. Rockler recommends using only cloth-backed sandpaper with the Sanding Bow, in lengths of 11-1/2-, 12-1/2- or 13-1/2-in. Sanding belts aren’t included, but you can purchase it in a Woodturner’s Multi-roll Sanding Pack (item 22134) for $19.99.

The Sanding Bow (item 50119) sells for $19.99.

Shellac Over Floor Paint? https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/shellac-over-floor-paint/ Tue, 23 Oct 2018 12:15:17 +0000 http://rocklerwj.wpengine.com/?p=47996 Some floors I recently painted show foot traffic too easily. Would a coat of shellac over the paint be a good way to solve this problem?

Recently I painted floors in some rental property with a Sherwin-Williams floor paint. I’m not happy with the finish at all, because footprints show too easily. Would a coat of shellac over this water-based paint do the trick? – Garry Meador

Tim Inman: Shellac for a floor finish would be the last thing I would recommend! Not only is it too brittle to stand up to the guff of floor service, it is also highly soluble in typical floor cleaning solutions that contain ammonia. Floor cleaning soaps and solutions will just wash it away. Shellac for the floor? No!

When I was a skinny college kid at Iowa State University – back in the last century – we were required to do research projects on finishes. We tested various finishes for suitability for different purposes. One of my experiments involved floor finishes. To do the test, we finished sample boards about the size of library cards (Oh my! Now that is a last-century illustration that won’t work anymore …). Let me change that to this: we used small wooden blocks about the size of an iPhone. Then, after the finishes were fully cured and hardened, we taped them down to the floor at the threshold of my dorm room. Everybody was instructed to be sure to step on ‘em when they came into the room and left. After a given period of time, we collected the worn samples and headed for the lab. Interestingly, the finishes that were the hardest failed quickest and most severely. Finishes that were softer lasted better. Counterintuitive, as we would say today. Good marine varnishes are actually softer than fine furniture finishes. Intuitively, it might seem logical that something that will last and hold up to the elements outdoors on a boat would also be a good thing to use on a dining table in the house. In practice, it isn’t. This holds true for shellac as well. It is a beautiful furniture finish and it has other marvelous uses, but it is a very brittle resin and is very dissolved by a number of things. Again, shellac on floors is not a good choice.

Koala Bank https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/koala-bank/ Tue, 23 Oct 2018 11:26:18 +0000 http://rocklerwj.wpengine.com/?p=48058 A lot of woodworking projects start with the question "Can you make..."? When prompted to try his hand at a Koala-themed coin bank, this reader got to work.

I get request from folks for various wood projects with the latest being, “Can you make a Koala Bear Coin Bank?” My response is almost always the same, “I don’t know but it sounds like fun.” I’m sure a real woodworking craftsman could create a detailed computer plan and refine it but this is my take on the Koala Bear Bank.

Creating your own hot pipe bending jig at home is simpler than you might think. Rob Johnstone explains how we built the jig in our shop, and the techniques that we use to bend thin pieces of wood (and, yes, we still break the occasional piece). He also offers some important safety tips for working with this equipment.
